Hiccups
I have often wondered what a fetal hiccup would feel like, but I'm pretty sure that is what I felt this morning... I was trying to fall back asleep at 4:45am, when David had to leave for work this morning due to the blizzard we received yesterday when all of a sudden I was being "kicked" on opposite sides of my belly simultaneously in a rhythmic pattern. I decided that this must be what a hiccup feels like. Pretty wild... The genetic counselor in me had to remind myself that hiccups are a normal part of breathing and that it does not necessarily indicate a fatty acid oxidation disorder like I hear about in clinic.... Oh the joys of work. -shan

School spirit
Its hard to imagine that we could squeeze anything in between watching 48 games of basketball this weekend, but somehow we managed to find time to go down the street to The Goddard School's Open House. The school is officially opening on Monday and so we thought that we would take a look around to see the finished product and meet some of the staff. If you remember, The Goddard School is the first place where David heard how much daycare can cost for an infant. There was total disbelief that it could actually cost that much! However the next few weeks were filled with trips to other centers that cost just as much or more, were further from our house, and some were cluttered and had funny smells (like steamed broccoli). AND every place had limited availability towards the end of the year. It seemed like people must have been signing up their unborn children as soon as the line showed up on the stick! So since we really felt comfortable with The Goddard School, we signed the little one up. I guess we'll have to start looking at elementary schools soon...

Pick 8 challenge
Most of you have probably already heard about this, but I'm doing an alternative game to the bracket this year where you pick 8 teams and get points based on their seed and the number of wins they have. For example, a #3 seed that wins 6 games would get 18 points, a #10 seed that wins 2 games would get 20 points, and so on, and the person who gets the most total points wins. Its $5 to enter, winner take all. If you're interested then let me or shannon know by wednesday.

Heart of a champion
We had 2 big exciting events happen this weekend. First, David heard the baby's heartbeat for the first time (Shannon had heard it in one of her doctor's visits previously). We borrowed a prenatal heart listener from a friend a while back. It says that you hear the baby's heart beat best in the 3rd trimester, but we thought that we'd give it a shot anyway. After covering every inch of Shannon's belly a few times, we almost gave up, but then we heard a soft fast beating sound. We zoned in on that area and sure enough, his little ticker was pounding away. He even started kicking, which made a big thud on the amplifier. But he's been kicking a lot lately, especially after Shannon has dessert or when he hears Bill Self's voice.
Which brings us to the other excitement, KU won a fifth straight Big 12 title in basketball. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!
